Why Cole Palmer Missed The Chelsea Vs West Ham Match

Cole Palmer was initially included in Chelsea’s squad to face West Ham. However, he left the warm-up early and was later excluded from the squad.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca later clarified that Palmer was excluded from the starting line-up because he has not been fully fit in the past few days. The 23-year-old has been struggling with a groin problem and Maresca preferred not to take any risk to avoid further complications.

“Cole in the last four or five days was not one hundred per cent. Today he tried in the warm-up, but he felt something, so we preferred not to take any risks and make it worse, and we will see in the next hours if it’s something important or not. It’s a groin problem.” Enzo Maresca said, according to Chelsea’s official website.

Maresca further stated that Palmer had the groin problem last weekend when Chelsea faced Palmer. That explains the midfielder’s subdued performance in the match. He was surprisingly quiet despite impressing in the FIFA Club World Cup, where he scored a brace in the final as the Blues humiliated current European champions Paris Saint-Germain.

How Chelsea Thumped West Ham

The Chelsea vs West Ham London derby was one of the biggest English Premier League fixtures of the weekend. Todd Boehly’s £1 billion squad had a terrible start, conceding in the first six minutes of the match. Paqueta fired a spectacular striker from outside the box that flew over goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

It looked as if West Ham were finally bouncing back in style after suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat in their opening game of the season against Sunderland. However, the Blues made amends for the early goal, with Joao Pedro nodding home from Pedro Neto’s cross into the danger area.

West Ham thought they had taken the lead moments later when Niclas Fullkrug pounced on a loose ball and fired past Sanchez. However, the goal was later ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Trevoh Chalobah then bullied Paqueta off the ball before Pedro crossed it to Neto who completed the move with a goal in the 23rd minute. Summer signing Estavao then made a brilliant run into the box before crossing the ball to Enzo Fernandez who tapped into the empty net.

The Blues continued with their thrashing shortly after the break as Moises Caicedo scored from a corner. Chalobah, who had been outstanding throughout the match, then scored Chelsea’s fifth in the 58th minute.
