Miguel Angel Lopez Diaz, better known by his ring name Rey Misterio Sr, has passed away at the age of 66. Misterio is a retired professional wrestler from Mexico who made a name for himself while performing in lucha libre. He is the uncle of WWE superstar Oscar Gutierrez Rubio, also known as Rey Mysterio Jr, who is now a Hall of Famer.
Misterio Sr died on December 20, 2024, with the news being shared on social media by his son Hijo De Rey Misterio Lopez. The actual cause of his death is yet to be disclosed. He last wrestled in April 2023, where he teamed up with Mr. Iguana and Aero Star to beat Hereje Nightmare Azteca and Hijo de Pirata Morgan.
Social media was flooded with messages of condolences to the wrestler’s family after the news reached wrestling fans. Marisela Pena, who is the president of the iconic Mexican wrestling organization Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, is among those who have posted a statement regarding the former wrestler’s death.
“We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Angel Lopez Diaz, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.” Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The death of Rey Misterio Sr comes just weeks after Rey Mysterio Jr’s father and Dominik Mysterio’s grandfather passed away at the age of 76. Mysterio’s father died on November 17.
The Story of Rey Misterio Sr
To start with, he was born on January 8, 1958, in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. Growing up, Misterio wanted to be a professional boxer and started training when still a small boy. However, an injury to his arm led to him deciding to choose a new path.
On January 6, 1976, Misterio officially started his professional wrestling career on a show called “Day of the Kings”. What followed was years of success and the Mexican is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers Mexico has produced in history.
After conquering Mexico’s wrestling scene, Misterio crossed borders and also competed in America’s promotion World Championship Wrestling. He took part in the Starrcade 1990 pay-per-view event, teaming with Konnan in the “Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup. They won against Chris Adams and Norman Smiley in the first round but lost to The Steiner Brothers in the next.
Misterio Sr is often credited with bringing Mexican wrestling to the international stage. He opened his gym in 1987 and has trained prominent wrestlers such as his nephew Rey Mysterio, Damian 666, Konnan and Psicosis. While many wrestling fans worldwide believed that Mysterio is his son, he is not.
Misterio Sr retired from professional wrestling in 2009 but has been making special appearances in the ring. The Mexican was a key figure in lucha libre and is best known for his masked persona.
