On Friday, August 29, Tottenham Hotspur announced the signing of Dutch attacking midfielder Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig. Simons has been one of the most sought after players in Europe in recent years and was almost joining Chelsea before securing a move to Spurs with just a few hours left before the transfer window closes.

According to reliable sources such as Sky Sports, Spurs have paid a transfer fee of £51 million to sign the 22-year-old Netherlands international. Simons has agreed to an initial five-year deal with the option to extend for two more years.

Speaking after signing his Tottenham Hotspur contract, Simons said that he has “been dreaming of this for a long time”. The youngster also added that he’s happy at his new club and believes it’s the right place for him. Spurs boss Thomas Frank played a crucial role in convincing the player to sign for the English club.

“I’m really happy and can’t wait to get going. I’ve been dreaming of this for a long time. It’s a great club and when I met the head coach I knew straight away that this was the right place for me.” Sky Sports quotes Simons.

Simons has preferred to wear jersey number seven at Spurs because it was his favorite at PSV and he also wears it when representing the Netherlands national team. He spoke admirably about former Spurs captain Son Heung-min, who parted ways with the English club a few weeks ago and signed with Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC.

Son, who is arguably one of the greatest players in Tottenham’s history, wore the number seven during his time in England and captained the club to UEFA Europa League victory at the end of last season, beating Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United in the final. New signing Simons is also hopeful of making history wearing the number seven at Spurs.

Xavi Simons’ arrival means Spurs have ended the search for an attacking midfielder after it was announced that James Maddison will miss majority of the 2025-26 season due to injury. The England international ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during a pre-season match against Newcastle United earlier this month in South Korea.

Spurs Beat Chelsea To Xavi Simons Signing

Simons was linked to Chelsea and sources even reported that an agreement had been reached between the two parties. The Blues also held talks with RB Leipzig and it seemed everything was going according to plan for the youngster’s highly anticipated move to Stamford Bridge.

However, things changed in the past few days as Spurs also expressed interest in signing Simons and even made contact to the player. When the Dutchman traveled to London on Thursday, both Chelsea and Spurs were pushing for his signature. However, it was Thomas Frank’s side that won the race to sign the 22-year-old as Chelsea decided to pursue other options.

The FIFA Club World Cup champions are finalizing Alejandro Garnacho’s deal as they believe the Manchester United star is an ideal option after missing out on Simons. Garnacho was given the greenlight to leave Manchester United earlier in the summer and has not been included in any of Ruben Amorim’s matchday squads this season.
