Romanian tennis star Simona Halep has announced her retirement from professional tennis at the age of 33. The former world number one decided to call it quits on Tuesday evening after the Transylvania Open match in Cluj-Napoca, which she lost in straight sets.
Halep leaves behind an impressive career, which includes two Grand Slam wins and 22 other title triumphs. The Romanian, who clinched the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon the following year, occupied the top spot in women’s tennis for a total of 64 weeks. She was the world number one at the end of 2017 and 2018.
While announcing her retirement, Halep said she had made peace with the decision as her body can no longer sustain the pressure of being at the top.
“I am very much at peace with this decision. I am a very realistic person, and I know what it takes to reach the top. My mind and body can no longer handle that level of effort. I am realistic, and it is time to close this chapter. At this moment, I just want to rest… We never know what life has in store for us, but this is a ‘goodbye’ here at home, on the court in Cluj.” Romania-Insider.com quotes the former world number one in women’s singles.

Halep further added that she will continue to play the beautiful game and will be a spectator during matches. The 33-year-old had earlier revealed that she was considering retirement due to a knee injury which forced her to withdraw from the the recent Auckland and Australian Open qualifiers. She told GOLAZO.RO that she has been considering retirement due to old age and struggles with injuries.

What Supplement Did Simona Halep Use?
Halep was previously involved in a doping scandal which resulted in her being banned for four years in September 2023. According to sources, she faced charges after testing positive for the banned substance Roxadustat at the US Open in August 2022.
Roxadustat is a drug used to treat anaemia as it multiplies red blood cells in one’s body and haemoglobin, which helps the body fight fatigue. Despite arguing that she took the drug unknowingly, she was handed a provisional suspension and it was later discovered to have irregularities in her athlete biological passport (ABP).
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) requested a six-year ban for the Romanian player but she was instead banned for four years. The former world number one was expected to return to tennis in 2026 but the penalty was reduced to six months after her appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Halep lost the first set but bounced back in style to beat Sloane Stephens and avoid a fourth successive major defeat. Her brilliance continued at Wimbledon where she beat Serena Williams in just 56 minutes to triumph. The amazing performances saw her rank world number one for 64 weeks.
In addition to her two majors, Halep has also clinched 22 titles on the WTA tour. She has earned USD 40 million in prize money.
