Martins was born on October 28 1984 to Nigerian parents. He has two siblings, the late Oladipupo Martins- his elder and John Ronan Martins- younger brother.
His elder brother was also a professional footballer who played for Reggiana, Partizan and Innsbruck before retiring due to heart problems and later succumbed to the same.
His late brother was a role model to Martins and every step he took counted. So he began playing street football and later joined a local football club known as Club F.C. Ebedei.
Mr Churchill Olise scouted him on the streets and he broke the international scene making his senior career by joining Serie A club Inter Milan youth team. This led to his first team debut the following season, having his breakthrough.

Obafemi began playing football on the streets of his home town and then joined a local football club F.C. Ebedei, later moved to Italy, and joined club A.C. Reggiana on signing a youth contract.
He was signed by Inter Milan for a transfer fee of $802,331 the youth team helping them win the Campionato Nazionale Primavera.
Martins submitted a transfer request into joining Newcastle United and it went through for a sum of $16 million, on a contract of five years.
Newcastle accepted a bid from VfL Wolfsburg at a fee of $11 million, on a contract of four years. One year after, VfL Wolfsburg sold him out to Rubin Kazan for a reported fee of $18 million where he signed a three-year contract.
Following his son’s birth, he requested a transfer to England so that he could be close to his family, and joined Birmingham City on a loan deal with an option of a permanent deal of $6.2 million.
One year later, he joined Levante on a two-year contract, and club Seattle Sounders FC bought him on a clause of $4 million as a designated player.
Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua signed him and he stayed at the club for four and a half seasons. His contract was terminated and he moved to Wuhan Zall.
