It was not a smooth building his career for 30 years but he is a happy man reaping the benefits of what he sowed.

Azumah Nelson was married to Peggy Nelson who died of cancer and together, they were blessed with six children. David Nelson, Dorinda Nelson, Doris Nelson, Dylis Nelson, Avia Azuma and Nelson Junior.

The boxing champion has been training his son Nelson Junior to see him inherit the legacy. Azuma built a legacy in his boxing career and was honored by the government when they named the former Kaneshie Sports Complex after Azuma.

There is a complex inside the recreation facility that is known as ‘Azuma Nelson Sports Complex’. The complex serves as a Youth Resource Centre with facilities such as a swimming pool, a standard football pitch, a basketball court, running tracks, a tennis court, and an ICT Centre, among others.

Career

Azuma Nelson net worth goes way back to the start of his boxing career in 1978. He competed at the All -Africa Games and Commonwealth Games winning gold medals in the featherweight for both events.

Azumah fought in 13 fights and conquered all. Despite his achievements, he was known to the outside world and was invited to the WBC featherweight champion in New York becoming the winner. After the New York WBC, he won four more fights in 1983 and became royalty by knocking out Wilfredo Gomez in round 11 winning the WBC featherweight championship.

Nelson was in Los Angeles and fought Marion Martinez by a split decision over 12 rounds but he was dropped in the 10th round in 1988 and it was a sad moment. In 1995, he defeated Gabriel Ruelas in 5th round claiming the title of World Champion. The following year, he and his opponent Leija had their third bout and he maintained his title with a six-round knockout.

Nelson lost the WBC title to Genaro Hernandez when he was beaten in twelve rounds on points. In 2018, Nelson organized an event to mark his 60th birthday at the Bukom Boxing Arena an event that was attended by dignitaries like the then-British Commissioner to Ghana, the president of the Boxing Authority and two former sports ministers among others. There were five bouts and three wins by knockout.

In his entire boxing career, Azumah’s total number of fights is 47 and he won 39 of them. There were six losses and two draws.
