Egypt will host the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced.
CAF announced on Thursday that the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) got hosting rights for the U20 AFCON 2025 following the withdrawal by Ivory Coast.
Initially, CAF had awarded the rights to the Ivory Coast, who pulled out at the last minute, leaving CAF in limbo.
Ivory Coasts’ football federation, FIF, led by Yacine Idriss Diallo, in a statement said it had informed CAF of its change of heart in hosting U20 AFCON 2025.
The FIF President did not give any clear reason as to why it withdrew from hosting the event. However, financial and logistical challenges may have led to the Ivory Coast’s withdrawal from hosting the event.
Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Dates
The Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 starts on April 27 to May 18. Twelve teams will participate in the event.

CAF, in a statement, said that it passed the hosting rights to Egypt because it bid to host the TotalEnergies CAF U20 AFCON. This will be the second time Egypt will host the event. It first hosted the U20 AFCON in 2023.

Winners of the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 will earn three points, one point for a draw and 0 points for losing. In case two teams have a tie in points, goal difference in matches played will be used to determine the winner.
The quarterfinals will have eight teams playing on May 11 and May 12. Four winners from the quarterfinals will play in the semifinals on May 15 and May 17.
The finals will be played on May 18 between the two teams who won in the semis. Senegal won in 2023 after thrashing Gambia 2-0. Nigeria won the U20 AFCON 2024 after beating Senegal 1-0.
Morocco is under sharp focus as it finds itself in a group of football heavyweights in Group B. Competitors include Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa, teams that present formidable opposition.
FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025
Four teams from the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 will qualify for FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025. The four African teams will join 20 other teams for the World Cup.
