Portuguese centre-back Ruben Dias and his club Manchester City have reached an agreement to extend his stay until the summer of 2029.

Dias, who has spent the last five years of his career with the Cityzens, has penned down a new four year deal. His previous contract was set to expire in the summer of 2027 but the new deal means he will now remain at Etihad Stadium until 2029 with the option of extending for a further twelve months.

Dias has been a key player for Manchester City since his arrival in 2020. He played a significant role in City’s dominance in the Premier League in recent years and triumph in the UEFA Champions League two years ago.

However, Dias struggled with injuries last season, which saw him reduced to 25 Premier League starts. When fit, he is one of the players always on Pep Guardiola’s starting XI.

The Portugal international has made a total of 223 appearances for Manchester City and already played his first match this season as the Cityzens thrashed Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0. He played the whole match.

“I am incredibly happy today. I love Manchester – it is my home now – and I love the Manchester City fans. When I think about the trophies we have won and the way we have played our football during my time here, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.” Dias said after signing a new contract with Manchester City.

City are likely to switch their attention to John Stones and Bernardo Silva as both players have one year left before their current contracts expire. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ederson and Ilkay Gundogan have less than twelve months left in their deals. Ederson has been linked to a move away from the Etihad this summer. Meanwhile, there have been no transfer reports for Gundogan who left City at some point and had a short spell in La Liga playing for FC Barcelona.

The other stars of Manchester City whose contract will start worrying the club are Phil Foden, Manuel Akanji and star midfielder Rodri. All three players have two years left on their current deals.

Ruben Dias At Man City

When Dias signed with Manchester City in September 2020, he was a 23-year-old prospect. However, Guardiola immediately tasked him with the duty of leading the backline of City as he looked forward towards winning his third Premier League title with the Cityzens.

But Dias did more than helping Guardiola win a third Premier League title at Man City. The Portuguese international won the Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Player of the Year awards in his debut season.

Dias never stopped winning there. Fast forward to 2025, he has won 10 major titles, including Manchester City’s first-ever UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Manchester City Director of Football Hugo Viana said the club was excited with Dias’ contract renewal. He also stated that the Portuguese centre-back has played a massive role in Man City’s success in the last five years.

“As a club, we’re really excited that Ruben has signed a new contract and committed his long-term future to the Club. His performances over the past five years have been outstanding and he is a big reason why we have been so successful.” Hugo Viana is quoted by Man City’s official website.
