Ruben Amorim is the man to trying to turn things around at Old Trafford. At the age of 39, Amorim has already established himself as one of the best managers in the football world, thanks to his achievements with Portuguese clubs Braga and Sporting CP.

The former footballer turned manager arrived at Manchester United two months ago following the sacking of Dutchman Erik ten Hag. Hailed by some fans as “the new Sir Alex Ferguson”, Amorim has the task of getting United out of the bottom half of the table and turning them into a team that competes for major trophies such as the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Besides being a tactical genius, majority of football fans barely know Amorim’s personal life. Where was he born? Is he married? Does he have children? Where Is Ruben Amorim From?

Ruben Filipe Marques Amorim was born on January 27, 1985, in Lisbon, Portugal, to his father Virgilio Dalot Costa Amorim and Anabela Francisco. According to Football Biography, Amorim’s mother was hospitalized and gave birth to him earlier than expected. The current Manchester United manager is the second born in his family, with his older brother Mauro being barely two years older than him.

Unfortunately, Amorim’s parents divorced when he was just one year old and he grew up splitting his time between his father’s home in Alverca and mother’s Corroios.

Amorim shares a strong bond with his cousins David Simão and Bruno Simão, who also became professional footballers in Portugal. The three have been friends since childhood and Amorim is the godfather of Bruno’s eldest daughter.

Ruben Amorim’s Football Career

Amorim started playing football at a young age, just like his older brother. The two spent majority of their time together playing football and became inseparable playmates.

Amorim later enrolled at Clube Atlético Cultural where he started playing organized football with other boys his age. Besides football, he also played roller hockey and even competed at international tournaments, winning a title.

In 2000, Amorim was offered a chance at Benfica academy where he continued to develop his skill as a footballer. Two years later, he joined Belenenses where he completed his youth development and was handed his senior debut on December 14, 2003.

Amorim went on to become a key player for Belenenses and spent the next five years playing for the club. The talented midfielder returned to his boyhood club Benfica in the summer of 2008 and went on to become a key player for the Portuguese giants. During his time with the club, he won three league titles, Taca de Portugal and Supertaca Candido de Oliveira. He was part of the squad that finished as runner-up at 2013-14 UEFA Europa League.

Amorim retired as a Benfica player and soon started studying to be a coach at the Lisbon Football Association. He started his coaching journey during the 2018-19 season at Casa Pia, which plays in the third division of Portuguese football. It was at Casa Pia where he started using the back three system which he employs up to date.

Despite initially agreeing to become Benfica youth coach, Amorim later turned down that offer and moved instead chose to become the manager of Braga. After a season with Braga, he moved to Sporting CP where he made a name for himself as one of the top managers in the world. He led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years at the end of the 2020-21 season.

Manchester United boss Amorim married his wife Maria Joao Diogo in 2013. The two said their vows at the Palacio de S. Marcos church in Coimbra, Portugal, with their wedding being attended by 160 guests.

Ruben Amorim’s wife Maria holds a degree in telecommunications engineering. She currently runs her own interior design business.
