“I am in Marrakesh in Morocco, because drum rolls… I have been selected as one of AFCON influencers,” she posted on her socials on Wednesday.

Nana added that such an opportunity is dumbfounding for her because she never imagined that a girl from a humble background could ever earn such recognition.

“Come on. It is a huge opportunity for me, to be honest, and I sometimes honestly do not believe my life. I swear to God, if you come from where I come from, where your role models are basically fishermen and fisherwomen,” the excited Owiti offered.

Known for her strong voice in Kenyan sports circles, Nana Owiti is a vocal supporter of Ulinzi Starlets and a regular at Kenya Premier League matches.

She is also a diehard Arsenal supporter. She uses her platform to advocate for more opportunities for women in Sports.

Nana Owiti Sports Advocacy

In June, she spearheaded the Empower Mchezaji tournament in Kajiado, an initiative aimed at breaking barriers for female athletes and challenging societal norms.

Kajiado is, largely, a Maasai-dominated area where women are yet to enjoy life’s offerings like their fellow women from other parts of the country.

The patriarchal nature of the region limits women’s access to education and other related activities such as sports.

With AFCON 2025 expected to attract over 300 million viewers worldwide, influencers like Owiti will be crucial in shaping narratives around African football.
