The two NBA teams officially announced their sponsorship agreement with Rwanda on Monday in a bid to boost tourism and sports here.
This deal comes hot on the heels of the Rwandan government’s active role in raising its international sports profile in recent years.
That’s despite Rwanda’s criticism over attempts to gloss over its long history of human rights concerns.
Is Los Angeles Rams Rwanda Deal Important?
Rwanda’s latest sports marketing push has taken a bold step into the US market through sponsorship deals with the Los Angeles Rams and the LA Clippers.
Under the agreements, the East African nation’s “Visit Rwanda” campaign will feature as the exclusive jersey patch for the Clippers.
This campaign will be conspicuously displayed at the Rams’ home ground, SoFi Stadium as part of the Los Angeles Rams Rwanda deal.

The “Visit Rwanda” branding will also appear inside the Clippers’ new Intuit Dome arena and at Hollywood Park, a 300-acre mixed-use complex.
All three venues — SoFi Stadium, the Intuit Dome, and Hollywood Park — are situated in Inglewood.
The Rwanda Development Board confirmed the partnerships are multiyear, though financial details remain undisclosed.
Rwanda committed to paying the NBA’s African division between $6 million and $7 million each year through an agreement entered in 2023.
In return, these teams will display the “Visit Rwanda” slogan on their jerseys, while $104 million, state-of-the-art arena hosts select playoff games.

The strategy mirrors Rwanda’s existing high-profile deal with English Premier League side Arsenal, reportedly worth at least $12 million annually.
For Rwanda, these partnerships are vital tools to promote tourism and boost its global image. Tourism is a key pillar of Rwanda’s economy, and such visibility in major US sports leagues could draw new visitors and investment.
NBA Criticism Over Rwanda Sponsorship
However, the LA Clippers and Los Angeles Rams Rwanda deal have also sparked criticism.

Rights groups accuse President Paul Kagame’s government of using international sports to deflect attention from a history of political repression and alleged human rights abuses.
In a report released last year by ESPN, it highlighted the important role that the NBA’s partnership with Rwanda played in the league’s strategic growth across Africa.
The coverage raised concerns about the NBA’s willingness to overlook serious allegations of human rights violations.
There are claims that include the detention, mistreatment, and killing of political dissidents, along with accusations of supporting child soldier recruitment in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
These issues stand in stark contrast to the social justice causes the league and its athletes champion for domestically.
Despite the controversy, the Los Angeles Rams Rwanda deal points to Rwanda’s deepening ties in global sports.
Why Did NBA Overlooks Rwanda’s Human Rights Violation Records?
On Monday, inquiries about the sponsorship went unanswered by both the Rams and the Clippers, and the NBA also declined to issue an immediate comment.
The NFL, however, confirmed that the Rams had informed the league of the agreement, noting that it falls within league rules and U.S. law.
Rwanda Development Board CEO Jean-Guy Afrika while unveiling the partnership, noted that the initiative is critical.
He said it’s designed to showcase Rwanda’s landscapes and rich biodiversity to audiences in Los Angeles and to fans of the NBA and NFL globally.
