Two of the biggest ball-strikers in women’s tennis, Aryna Sabalenka and Amanda Anisimova, clashed at the US Open women’s final on Saturday.

“After those two finals where I completely lost control over my emotions, I just didn’t want that to happen again. There were a few moments when I was this close to just let it go. I was like ‘C’mon now, you have to stay focused. Keep going, keep trying.’ It’s really helped me. I think I have to keep the same mindset every time.” The Guardian quotes Sabalenka.

Aryna Sabalenka couldn’t match Madison Keys’ destructive power at the Australian Open final, hence losing the first Grand Slam of the year. The 27-year-old Belarusian entered the French Open final convinced she was mentally and physically prepared to face her opponent Coco Gauff. However, she lost her cool in the match and made 70 unforced errors, hence losing the title. Her post-match press conference turned fiery, a clear sign that emotions had overwhelmed her.

Sabalenka, who was one of the favorites at Wimbledon, as knocked out in the semifinal by Anisimova. However, the world number one ensured she came prepared for Anisimova in the final of the US Open on Saturday.

The home favorite took the early lead in the tensed match with the same destructive ball-striking technique that saw her record wins over Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka. However, Sabalenka managed to remain calm under the pressure and served well in key moments to claim the first set.

Anisimova was granted a lifeline deep in the second set when 4-5 down when her opponent misjudged a straightforward smash and slammed the ball into the net. She took advantage of the golden opportunity and went ahead in the set after pounding a forehand winner.

However, Sabalenka refused to let emotions take their toll on her as she bounced back in style to win the US Open women’s final. Anisimova, who had the support of majority of fans at the 25,000-seater Arthur Ashe Stadium believes she didn’t fight hard for her dreams on home soil. She looked away as the US Open title was handed to an opponent she beat at Wimbledon a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Sabalenka, who has been the top ranked player in the women’s category all season long, is the first woman to defend her US Open since Serena Williams in 2014. The 27-year-old’s career is increasingly becoming legendary as she draws level with Hana Mandlikova, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Kim Clijsters and Noami Osaka in Grand Slams won.
