Russian player Daniil Medvedev has been fined a whopping $76,000 for misconduct at the Australian Open. The 28-year-old, who exited the tournament in the second round, received the hefty fine for furiously smashing his racquet into the net during his first round clash against Kasidt Samrej and showing the same misconduct while playing against American qualifier Learner Tien.

For the first-round infringement, Medvedev was fined $10,000. After showing similar signs of frustration in his second match in Melbourne, he was penalized an additional $66,000. Australian Open organizers published the fines on Sunday.

According to BBC, Medvedev received 200,000 Australian dollars for reaching the second round of this year’s Australian Open. The Russian fifth seed was a finalist in last year’s event, losing to eventual winner Jannik Sinner. He has been runner-up in three of the last Australian Open events. However, he was far from his best at Melbourne Park this year.

Medvedev started showing frustrations as early as in the second set when he shouted at his coach. Things seemed to fall apart for him in the third set when his opponent took the lead.

With the world number 418, who was making his Grand Slam debut, seemingly on course to record one of the biggest upsets in Australian Open, Medvedev lost his cool and repeatedly hit the middle of the net after an unfortunate net cord went against him. Medvedev’s actions caused damage to the camera, which lost it’s feed. Also, his racquet broke.

Samrej seemed exhausted as the match went on, and eventually lost to the experienced Daniil Medvedev 6-2 4-6 3-6 6-1 6-2.

Medvedev’s struggles in Australian Open continued in the second round against 19-year-old American player Learner Tien. After Tien broke Medvedev take a 4-3 lead, the Russian fifth seed struck the ball against the back wall and toppled a camera behind a baseline. He then punched his racquet bag while complaining about being called for two consecutive foot-faults.

Novak Djokovic To Clash With Carlos Alcaraz In Australian Open Quarter-Final

On Sunday, Novak Djokovic set up one of the highly anticipated matches of the 2025 Australian Open after defeating Jiri Lehecka. The talented Serbian will now clash with Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-final.

Djokovic recorded a convincing 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-4) win over Lehecka, whereas Alcaraz progressed to the next round after Britain’s Jack Draper retired with a hip injury. Djokovic was booed by fans towards the end of his match with Lehecka and was quick to leave the arena afterwards.

His clash with Alcaraz is one that many tennis fans are looking forward to. The young Spaniard has beaten Djokovic in the past two Wimbledon finals and will be aiming to record another devastating victory later this week when they clash.

In other news, Australian broadcaster Tony Jones has apologized to Djokovic after making ‘insulting and offensive” comments against the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Jones, who works for Channel Nine, shouted: “Novak, he’s overrated, Novak’s a has-been, Novak kick him out” while live on air on Friday. His comments didn’t sit well with the Serbian as well as his plans and he issued an apology on Monday morning.
