He had an amazing amateur career playing in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) for the Mississauga Rebels. He then joined the Ontario after being drafted by the Mississauga Steelheads. Despite having a duty with the team, he was at the same time still a key member of the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP).
The highlights of his junior career include winning the Dave Tyler Junior Player of the Year Award for being the most outstanding American-born player in junior ice hockey.
