Career

Coming from a family with footballing history, Victor Wanyama fell in love with football at a very young age. He attended Kamukunji High School which is known to known to nurture young footballers.

Upon leaving high school, Wanyama had spells at JMJ Youth Academy, Nairobi City Stars, AFC Leopards and later Helsingborg. He then moved to Beerschot AC in the summer of 2008 where he began his senior career after signing a four-year deal.

Victor Wanyama impressed while playing for the Belgian club and attracted the attention of top clubs such as Celtic and CSKA Moscow who attempted to sign him. On 9 July 2011, Wanyama joined Scottish club Celtic and made his debut the following month in a 1-0 loss to St Johnstone.

While at Celtic, the talented midfielder became the first ever Kenyan footballer to score in the UEFA Champions League when he scored the first goal in his team’s 2-1 win over FC Barcelona.

Wanyama helped Celtic win the Scottish Premier League twice and the Scottish Cup prior to his move to English club Southampton. While at Southampton, he worked under manager Ronald Koeman and player with the likes of Sadio Mane and James Ward-Prowse.

Victor Wanyama continued with his career at Tottenham Hotspur and was part of the squad that reached the final of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League. The Kenyan footballer joined CF Montreal in March 2020 and after almost five years in the MLS, he left in January 2025 after the expiry of his contract.
