How Senegal Beat Sudan

The Lions of Teranga have looked sharp throughput the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 tournament. Despite being knocked out in the semi-final, they still had a chance to go home with bronze as they faced Sudan for a third-place finish.

Souleymane Diallo’s team looked sharp in the opening minutes of the game but found themselves trailing in the 6th minute when Tia Asad headed home Raouf Yagoub’s corner well taken corner kick. Sudan have been one of the best defensive teams in CHAN 2024 and once again showed their prowess holding on to their lead until the end of the first period.

Goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja made big saves to deny the Lions of Teranga a way back into the game. However, there was little he could do in the 58th minute to stop Seyni Ndiaye’s header from going in.

Having found the equalizer, Diallo’s side just passed the ball around trying to break Sudan’s solid defense. Meanwhile, the Falcons of Jediane threatened to kill the game on counter. They had the chance to win the match in the 82nd minute but Maaz Koko let his chance slip.

With no team scoring the third goal of the match, the only way to find the winner was through penalty shootouts. The Lions of Teranga remained calm in the shootouts, converting all their chances. However, Sudan started terribly with Walieldin Khidir missing the first spot-kick before Musab Makeen missed their fourth.
