Being the son of a former footballer, Johnstone began playing football at a young age. He started his career at Euxton Villa and was then signed by Manchester United in 2011.
Johnstone spent his early career days at United being loaned out to various clubs in England. The goalkeeper first played for Oldham Athletic and was then loaned out to Scunthorpe United. In 2013, he played for Walsall and Yeovil Town then moved to Doncaster Rovers.
From 2014 to 2016, Johnstone played for Preston North End. The English goalkeeper then spent the last years of his Manchester United career on loan at Aston Villa.
