On Thursday, Manchester City announced the signing of Omar Marmoush from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. According to sources, City have paid Frankfurt an initial £59 million (€70 million, $72.8 million), with the amount expected to rise to £63.4 million (€75 million, $78.1 million) for the deal.

Marmoush is the third signing City have completed this January following the arrival of defender Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and Vitor Reis, who joined from Palmeiras. Whereas Khusanov and Reis are more of squad players, Marmoush has been acquired to fill in the void left by Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, who was sold to Atletico Madrid last summer.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola admitted a few weeks ago that he made a mistake by not following the advice of senior officials at the club to refresh his squad. The Cytizens, who have had a difficult 2024-25 season so far, are aiming for a top four finish as winning the Premier League title now seems impossible.

One of City’s main problem this campaign has been someone to share the goalscoring duty with Erling Haaland and threaten the opposition. But now, there seems to be light at the end of the dark tunnel following the arrival of Omar Marmoush.

Marmoush has been a force to be reckoned with this campaign as he has scored 20 goals for Eintracht Frankfurt across all competitions. While it remains to be seen how he will link with Haaland, Guardiola has a reason to smile considering he now has options in front of goal.

Marmoush has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Manchester City, which means he is contracted to the Cityzens until 2029.

“To sign for Manchester City – one of the best teams in the world – is an amazing feeling. I am delighted, my family are so proud, and we are all very happy to be here in Manchester… I really am looking forward to getting going, meeting the other players and showing the Manchester City fans what I can do.”Marmoush said after signing with Manchester City, according to Manchester City’s official website.

Where Is Omar Marmoush From?

Born Omar Khaled Mohamed Abd Elsala Marmoush, the footballer originally hails from Cairo, Egypt. He was brought up in Cairo by his parents who hold citizenship for both Canada and Egypt.

Marmoush began his football journey in his native Egypt playing for Wadi Degla youth academy. The 25-year-old turned professional in 2016 at Wadi Degla and soon caught the attention of European clubs with his impressive performance.

Marmoush was acquired by German club VfL Wolfsburg in 2017 and continued with his development at the club playing for VfL Wolfsburg II. The forward made his debut in May 2020, as Wolfsburg thrashed Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 at BayArena. He was handed his maiden professional contract one month later.

To aid in his development, Marmoush was sent out on loan to FC St. Pauli, where he played 21 matches, scoring seven goals. The Egyptian forward spent the 2021-22 season on loan at VfB Stuttgart before returning to his parent club Wolfsburg where he made his way to the starting XI.

In his first season as a starter, the 2023-24 campaign, Marmoush scored 17 goals across 41 matches, helping Eintracht Frankfurt finish sixth in the Bundesliga and earn a spot in the Europa League. Interestingly, he took his game to higher levels this season, scoring 20 goals and registering 14 assists across 26 appearances. He has scored 15 in the league and has only been bettered by his national team teammate Mohamed Salah.

Marmoush’s performance has earned him Bundesliga Player of the Month for the month of September and November. The Egyptian aims to help City return to winning ways starting this Saturday when they face Chelsea in the English Premier League. However, he won’t be available for City’s crucial UEFA Champions League clash against Club Brugge next week.
