Is Elon Musk a sports fan? This is a question that has emerged following reports that the billionaire is interested in buying Liverpool.
Elon Musk’s father, Errol Musk, recently said in an interview on British radio Times Radio that his son has expressed the desire to invest some of his wealth in Liverpool. However, he fears that the English Premier League club owners, Fenway Sports Group, might decide to hike the price if they realize it’s Elon who is showing interest.
Errol also revealed that his son has a connection with Liverpool as his paternal grandmother, Cora Amelia Robinson, was born the city but later moved to South Africa.
“I can’t comment on that, they’ll raise the price! Oh yes, [he has expressed a desire], but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it. He would like to yes, obviously. Anybody would want to – so would I. His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family.” Errol Musk responded when asked by the host of Times Radio if his son wanted to buy Liverpool, according to Goal.com.
As already revealed, Liverpool is currently under the ownership of Fenway Sports Group, who acquired the club from previous owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks in 2010. Fenway Sports Group have done an impressive job in ensuring the club returns to the top of European football and competes for titles in home soil.
Forbes currently ranks Liverpool as the fourth-most valuable team in the world with a value of £4.3 billion ($5.4 billion). Elon is worth 80 times that amount and it remains to be seen if he will make a move in the years to come.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that Elon Musk has showed interest in buying a football club. In 2022, after Manchester United suffered a humiliating loss to Brentford, the tech billionaire said that if he would have the option of acquiring a football club then it would be the Red Devils. Musk grew up supporting Manchester United and it’s his favourite his team.
“If it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid.” Elon Musk wrote on Twitter.
Whereas Sir Jim Ratcliffe battled with Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani on who would buy Manchester United from the Glazers, Musk decided to purchase Twitter. He would later rename the popular social media platform to X.
