Premier League giants Manchester City made big changes in their squad on transfer deadline day, with Gianluigi Donnarumma joining the team and Ederson departing.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) agreed on a transfer fee of £26 million for Donnarumma, who had already said yes to the Cytizens’ project several weeks ago. The Italian goalkeeper fell out with the hierarchy at PSG and things escalated after the FIFA Club World Cup when he was told he was a surplus in the team following the arrival of Lucas Chevalier from Lille.

Donnarumma has joined Manchester City on a five-year deal with the option to extend for one year. He is the seventh player Pep Guardiola has added to his Etihad squad in the last three months.

Donnarumma is the third goalkeeper signing Manchester City have made this summer after the Cityzens brought in former shot-stopper James Trafford from Burnley and Marcus Bettinelli arrived from Chelsea. Despite Ederson being part of the team in the opening three games of the Premier League, he remained an unused substitute as Trafford was Pep Guardiola’s preferred choice for the number one position.
But with Donnarumma’s arrival, the Italian is likely to be Manchester City’s first choice goalkeeper. The ex-PSG man has proven to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has already made 312 appearances at club level. He has also played 74 times for the Italy national team and was part of the squad that triumphed at the Euro 2020 final.

Ederson Departs Manchester City
Ederson, one of the best goalkeepers of his generation, has parted ways with Manchester City. The Brazilian arrived at Etihad in 2017 as one of Guardiola’s first signings and became a key player for the team over the years. He made 372 appearances for the Cityzens across all competitions and helped them win 18 major titles. The only player with more appearances that Edeerson at City is Bernardo Silva.
His trophy cabinet at Manchester City includes the prestigious UEFA Champions League, six English Premier League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, four League Cups and three Community Shields. He also received several individual honors, including the Premier League golden glove award three times in a row, from 2020 to 2022. He was also included in the PFA Premier League team of the year two times during his time in the Premier League.

Reflecting on his Manchester City career, Ederson said that he leaves the Premier League giants “incredibly proud” of what they achieved together. He thanked Guardiola and goalkeeping coach Xabier Mancisidor for making him one of the best goalkeepers in football history.
