Gianluigi Buffon biography would be incomplete without talking about his personal life. Buffon was born on January 28, 1978, to a family of athletes in Carrara, Italy. His mother, Maria Stella Masocco, was a three-time champion in shot put and discus throw. On the other hand, his father, Adriano, practised shot put and was a weightlifter.

Buffon’s uncle, Dante Masocco, was a basketball player in Serie A1, whereas his elder sisters, Veronica and Guendalina, played professional volleyball. His sisters also played for the Italian national volleyball team. 

Buffon is a relative of legendary goalkeeper Lorenzo Buffon, who played for top clubs such as AC Milan, Inter Milan and Fiorentina. Lorenzo is a cousin of Buffon’s grandfather. 

Moving on to his love life, Buffon dated Czech model Alena Seredova for several years before marrying her in June 2011. They had two children before separating in 2014. The veteran goalkeeper then began dating Italian journalist Ilaria D’Amico, and the pair became engaged in 2017. He is Catholic.

Career

Buffon began his football career with the Parma youth system at the age of 13. He initially played as a midfielder before becoming a goalkeeper. He first played when Parma youth team’s goalkeepers suffered injuries. 

The Italian quickly adapted to his new role and impressed his coaches, who made him the first keeper of Parma youth team. 

Now into the heart of Gianluigi Buffon biography, the legendary footballer began his professional career at Parma. He was promoted to the senior squad in 1995 when he was 17 years old. 

Buffon made his Serie A debut against champions Milan, keeping a clean sheet in the goalless draw. Buffon made saves against Ballon d’Or winners George Weah and Roberto Baggio in the match. 

His outstanding performance soon made him a regular shot-stopper at Parma’s goalpost. He helped Parma win the Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana and the UEFA Cup before joining Juventus in 2001.

Buffon spent 17 years with Juventus, winning ten Serie A titles, Supercoppa Italiana, Copa Italia titles and Serie B. He joined Paris Saint-Germain and won the Ligue 1 title and the Trophee des Champions. 

The Italian goalkeeper returned to Juventus in 2019 and spent two seasons with the Italian giants before rejoining his boyhood club Parma in 2021. 

While representing the Italian national team, Buffon won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He collected a runner-up medal at the 2012 UEFA European Championship and a bronze medal at the FIFA Confederations Cup.
