What Led to FKF Prize Money Delay?

Speaking on Citizen TV on Thursday, the FKF boss painted a picture of a struggling federation. He explained that FKF prize money delay is a result of a cash crunch that the federation is grappling with.

Hussein, who took office in December 2024, acknowledged that the federation is overwhelmed by debts inherited from the previous administration, making it difficult to meet financial obligations.

“I’m not making excuses,” he clarified. “When I came in, the season was already halfway. The truth is, we’re still dealing with a huge debt load and trying to keep things afloat.”

He urged stakeholders and fans to be patient and promised that the upcoming 2025/26 season—his first full term in charge—would be the real test of his leadership.

He expressed hope that by then, FKF will be in a better position to reward top-performing teams.

“Judge me from the next season,” he said. “We’re committed to improving things and offering better financial rewards to clubs. Cash prizes are part of our motivation plan.”

FKF Plan to Motivate Teams

Despite FKF prize money delay, Hussein outlined an ambitious roadmap where prize money for winning teams could reach as high as Ksh 50 million.

However, he emphasized that this goal is tied to improving the league’s commercial value.

“We have to find a way to raise that kind of money,” he stated. “It’s only possible if the league is competitive, marketable, and strong enough to attract serious sponsorship.”

He also stressed the need to revamp the league’s image and appeal, saying its transformation into a commercially viable product is critical to attracting both investment and public support.

“To draw funding, we need to offer something that brands want to be associated with—something Kenyans can rally behind,” he added.

The 2025/26 FKF Premier League season is expected to begin in late September, giving Hussein and his team a clean slate to implement the changes they envision.
