Who are the favourites to replace Sean Dyche at Everton? Premier League club Everton announced on Thursday evening that they had parted ways with manager Dyche with immediate effect. The Briton’s sacking came just a few hours before the Toffees played their third round FA Cup clash against Peterborough of League One.
According to various sources on the internet, Everton owners The Friedkin Group (TFG) are currently searching for a suitable manager to take over from Dyche. The nine-time league title winners currently sit 16th on the Premier League table with one point above the relegation zone. In this article, SportsLeo takes a look at the favourites to replace Sean Dyche at Everton.
1. David Moyes
Let’s start by the man dominating headlines as far as the Everton job is concerned. David Moyes is a familiar face on the blue half of Merseyside as he previously managed the Toffees for over ten years. During his time at the club (2002-2013), Everton transitioned into a formidable outfit and one of the top teams in the Premier League.
Moyes then joined Manchester United in 2013 following the departure of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. However, his time in Manchester ended in an acrimonious departure at the end of the season. He then had a spell at La Liga side Real Sociedad before returning to England where he managed Sunderland and then took charge of West Ham United in 2017.
Moyes had a successful spell with the Hammers, winning the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League. He left the club at the end of last season. With Everton currently in need of a manager to help them survive the ongoing campaign, the 61-year-old is considered a favourite to take charge.
Next up on favourites to replace Sean Dyche is Jose Mourinho.
2. Jose Mourinho
Over the years, Mourinho is a name that has been linked with moves to top clubs across Europe. The current Fenerbahce boss is considered one of the greatest managers of his generation having won major titles at Porto, Inter Milan, Chelsea Real Madrid, Manchester United and AS Roma.
Mourinho has considerable experience managing Premier League teams and has even won the prestigious title three times with Chelsea. Bookmakers consider the Portuguese as as the odds-on favorite to take charge of Everton this season.
Mourinho said earlier this season (in October) that he is willing to manage an English club at the bottom of the table and not playing in any UEFA competition.
“I had three clubs in England, so four different periods I’ve coached in England, and I love it. The best thing I have to do is when I leave Fener is that I go to a club that doesn’t play in UEFA competition. So a club at the bottom in England who needs a coach in two years, I’m ready to go. I don’t want to speak anymore about it.” Jose Mourinho is quoted by the tabloid Express.
3. Leighton Baines
Leighton Baines, who is head coach of Everton’s under-18, was appointed as caretaker manager of the Toffees following the sacking of Sean Dyche. With help of club captain Seamus Coleman, Baines led Everton to a comfortable 2-0 win over Peterborough in the FA Cup.
Well, a couple of wins for the 40-year-old would be enough for The Friedkin Group (TFG) to extend his time at the top job. Baines has done a good job with the under-18s and could be a serious candidate to replace Dyche.
4. Thomas Frank
Closing up the list of favourites to replace Sean Dyche is current Brentford boss Thomas Frank. The 51-year-old has been in charge of Brentford for the last six years and has done quite a remarkable job.
Frank helped the Bees secure promotion to the Premier League in 2021 after winning the Championship play-off final at Wembley and has since turned them into a top-flight club. Brentford are currently tenth on the table, 10 points above Everton and it remains to be seen if he will agree to join the Toffees.
