The Kenyan esports scene witnessed another significant milestone on Saturday, March 7, as the eLigue 1 Kenya qualifiers took place in Nairobi. The tournament drew 256 players from Kenya and neighboring countries Uganda and Tanzania, making it one of the biggest EA Sports FC events held in the region.

The event was part of the global eLigue 1 Tour, which is an international esports project run by EA Sports and France’s Ligue 1 McDonald’s league. The competition gives players a rare chance to show off their skills and win prizes and a once-in-a-lifetime football experience in France.

The eLigue 1 Kenya delivered an exciting day of competition with intense matches, shocking upsets, and great performances from players all over East Africa. In the end, seven players made it to the Grand Final next weekend.

What Is the eLigue 1 Tour?

The eLigue 1 Tour is a global esports tournament based on the EA Sports FC soccer video game. Gamers aged 16 and above can enter the tournament, which is meant to connect fans of esports with the excitement of Ligue 1 football.

Players use PlayStation 5 consoles to play EA Sports FC 26, and matches follow a set of tournament rules, such as six-minute halves and penalty shootouts if the games end in a tie after 120 minutes.

The Kenyan version of the competition is especially important because the winner gets:

  • A fully sponsored trip to Paris

  • A chance to experience Ligue 1 matches and stadium tours

  • Cash prizes and international exposure

The eLigue 1 Kenya qualifiers continue to attract elite gamers from across East Africa because of these incentives.

Massive Turnout of 256 Players

This year’s eLigue 1 Kenya qualifiers featured a massive 256 competitors, showing just how fast esports is growing in Kenya. Players traveled from different counties across the country to participate in the event, while others came from neighboring nations such as Uganda and Tanzania.

The large turnout at the eLigue 1 Kenya qualifiers required a structured tournament format to ensure fair competition. The participants were divided into four groups, each consisting of 64 players. Each group had its own elimination bracket, and the strongest competitors advanced to the next round.

The atmosphere was electric the whole day as matches took place simultaneously on different gaming stations. Fans and fellow gamers closely watched as players battled through tight contests that often went down to the final minutes and penalties.

Group Stage Structure

Each of the four groups followed a knockout format where players faced off in one-on-one matches. The goal was simple: get through the bracket and be among the top four in your group.

Four players from each group advanced to the round of 32, meaning a total of 16 players progressed from the qualifiers stage. These 16 players then joined another elite group of competitors in the next stage of the tournament.

Top 14 Leaderboard Players

One interesting thing about the eLigue 1 Kenya qualifiers is that the top 14 players on the leaderboard did not start from the scratch. Instead, they went straight to the Round of 32, where they played against the players who made it through the group stage.

This system rewards players who do well all season long, but it also gives new players a chance to show what they can do.

When the Round of 32 started, things got a lot more intense as experienced players faced off against challengers who had already played several matches. From then on, every match was very important because the players were fighting for a spot in the Grand Final.

Who Made It to the Grand Final?

After hours of intense matches and elimination rounds, only seven players were able to make it to the Grand Final. These players will now fight for the title in the final stage of the competition, which is set for next weekend.

The seven finalists are:

  • Moses Ndarwa
  • Fox
  • Haruun Haruun
  • Marlone
  • Shaq
  • Prorate
  • Lil Pip

During the eLigue 1 Kenya qualifiers, all of these players showed great skill, tactical awareness, and calmness under pressure. Some players won their matches with big margins, while others moved on after tense penalty shootouts and closely fought encounters.

Regardless of how they made it to the final, all seven players now stand just one step away from becoming the next eLigue 1 champion.

Jojo Depay, the defending champion, received a direct ticket to the Grand Final. He will be joined by the seven qualifiers to complete the quarter-final lineup to eight players.

Jojo won the eLigue 1 Tour last year after securing a comeback victory over Harun Ahmed in a thrilling final. Besides the prize money, he also secured a fully sponsored trip to Paris, France.

Jojo is one of the favorites to win the Grand Final again. But the road to another title won’t be easy considering seven hungry challengers are ready to take his place.

The Grand Final Showdown

The Grand Final will be held next Saturday at the main campus of the University of Nairobi. The event is sure to be one of the biggest esports competitions in the country.

The tournament format will see players compete in knockout matches until only one champion remains. The winner will not only secure the championship but also receive a direct ticket to Paris for a Ligue 1 experience.

For Jojo Depay, the defending champion, this is a chance to show that his last win wasn’t a fluke. Never one to shy away from confidence, Depay sent a bold message to the seven challengers.

“I respect every finalist because they worked hard to get here, but I’m not afraid of anyone. This is my title and I’m ready to defend it. No one is going to win the Grand Final except me. I will beat all opponents who will be on my way. Let them come, I’m ready.” Jojo Depay said.

Tanzania’s Hermes Represents Well

Hermes, who is widely regarded as Tanzania 1, was one of the players to watch in the tournament. Hermes had an impressive run in the qualifiers, beating a number of opponents and making it far into the top 32.

His performance earned respect from many spectators and fellow competitors, as he represented Tanzanian strongly against some of Kenya’s top players. Despite his impressive performance, he missed a slot in the Grand Final after losing to Shaq, who is one of Kenya’s best players.

Even so, his performance showed how esports competitions in East Africa are becoming more regional, with players from different countries regularly competing against each other.

Ugandan Players Also Participated

There were also several Ugandan players at the event – Aksam, Kid Musa, Joao Bin, Emma Vert, Ezra and Umar Shun.

The Ugandan competitors made the tournament more interesting and helped keep the competitive spirit going all day.

None of them made it to the Grand Final, but their participation showed that esports events in Kenya are becoming more like regional competitions than just national ones.

Conclusion

The eLigue 1 Kenya qualifiers brought together 256 players from all over the region for an unforgettable day of esports action.

Seven players made it through the qualifiers after a series of intense knockout matches and high-pressure games. They will now join defending champion Jojo Depay to complete the eight-player team that will compete in the Grand Final next weekend.

With representation from all parts of the country, rising stars, and a reigning champion defending his crown, the Grand Final promises to be one of the most exciting esports events in East Africa this year.
