Isaiah Jamar Thomas was born on February 7, 1989, in Tacoma, Washington, United States. He is the son of James Thomas and Tina Baldtrip. Thomas’ father named him after legendary basketball player Isiah Thomas. This was after he placed a bet with his friend that the Lakers would defeat the Pistons in the 1989 Finals.
The deal was that if the Pistons won the match, James was to name his son after Isiah Thomas. Well, the Pistons won the match, and James kept his word. It was an easy choice for him since he had already made up his mind to name his son after Isiah.
James’ wife suggested that the name should be Isaiah and not Isiah. Growing up, he had the nicknames ‘Bighead’ and ‘Zeke’. Thomas began playing basketball at the local community centre in Tacoma.
