July 2028 will be historic as it marks the official Novak Djokovic retirement date. The Serbian will officially hang up his racket after the 2028 Olympic Games.

Djokovic will be the third tennis great of his era to retire. His long-time tennis nemesis, Roger Federer, opened the retirement path in 2022 when he announced that he would retire after the Davis Cup.

The Swiss battled injuries for years, and he finally threw in the towel at 42. Rafael Nadal then followed the path set by Federer with his retirement in 2024 citing recurring injuries.

Following Nadal and Federer’s exit, questions about Novak Djokovic retirement date lingered for a long time. However, the 24-time Grand Slam champion announced that he only wants to play professional tennis for three years.

Djokovic said that at 38, his body is still in top physical condition, allowing him to continue playing tennis until 2028. He wants to retire in style by representing Serbia in the next Olympics.

He isn’t keen on playing in other ATP Tour events as he was before. He admitted that his focus right now is on the four major Grand Slam events, namely, the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

He aims to amass as many Grand Slam wins as possible before the curtains fall on Novak Djokovic retirement date.

Speaking about his retirement, he said that he has achieved nearly everything he wanted in tennis and it’s time to focus on other as aspects of his life.

He said that he lived most of his life with a schedule on his head due to playing tennis for over two decades.

However, former tennis star Andy Roddick has cast aspersion on Novak Djokovic retirement date. He said that Djokovic is ambitious in his imagination of retiring at 41.

Roddick said it’s not realistic for Djokovic to push through to 2028 considering his current physical form.

He noted that the Serbian hasn’t made it past the semi-finals of all four major slams this season. Yet, he seems to ignore all other ATP tournaments, only focusing on the slams as he heads to retirement in 2028.

Will Djokovic Play the ATP Finals in 2025?

Djokovic withdrew from the ATP Finals 2025 due to a shoulder injury, which worsened during his match with Lorenzo Musetti at the Athens Open.  He had hoped to recover before the start of the tournament, but his recovery was slow.

The Serbian has had issues with his shoulder for weeks. He wore a shoulder strapping throughout his play in Greece.

He beat Musetti in the tournament’s final to bag his 101 ATP victory. He also made history by becoming the oldest tennis player to win the ATP Finals.

Incidentally, Musetti will replace Djokovic in the ATP Finals 2025. His physical form over the last year sparked many thoughts about Novak Djokovic retirement date.

His physical form has been under scrutiny for the last two seasons after notable struggles on the court with a wrist injury.

However, he remained adamant that he was fit to continue playing.

Why Did Djokovic Withdraw from ATP Finals 2025?

A shoulder injury forced Djokovic out of the ATP Finals 2025 in Turin, a tournament his family largely owns. He did not immediately communicate his withdrawal from the event, leaving many in suspense.

He later announced through his socials that he wouldn’t participate in the event, adding that the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will bring Novak Djokovic retirement date to fruition.
