Football and music have long been connected. Players are often seen with headphones listening to music when  alighting from the team bus. We’ve also seen videos from changing rooms where players are jamming to hit songs.

While some simply enjoy listening to music, others have taken their passion further by releasing their own songs. Sportsleo takes a look at five famous footballers who have made music.

1. Memphis Depay

Memphis Depay has played for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. The Dutchman is currently playing in the top division of Brazilian football for Corinthians.

Off the pitch, Depay is known for his stylish looks and music career. The forward released his debut rap album, Heavy Stepperin 2017. He earned praise from fans and critics alike for his lyrical prowess in his first album. However, he has been criticized for featuring lots of blings, fast cars and a private jet in his music videos.

2. Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos recently joined the list of footballers who have made music when he released his debut single Cibeles in August 2025. The Spaniard has been a lifelong fan of music and has eventually decided to turn his hand to music as he prepares for life after retirement.

In the song Cibeles, Ramos takes a dig at his former club Real Madrid where he spent 16 years. The centre-back can be seen posing for the camera while grasping some rosary beads in the music video as he sings and raps in Spanish. The song clocked more than 600,000 views on YouTube 24 hours after its release. One month later, it has eleven million views.

3. Alisson Becker

Alisson Becker’s fingers aren’t just skilled at keeping the ball out of the net but also at strumming the guitar. The talented goalkeeper is one of the renowned footballers who have done music.

Becker is a rock music fan and performed a cover of Oasis Don’t Look Back In Anger track during his initiation to Liverpool following his arrival from AS Roma in the summer of 2018. The Brazilian shot-stopper previously collaborated with Scouse musician Jamie Webster, playing the guitar.

Surprisingly, Alisson isn’t the only goalie who is good at playing musical instruments. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is a talented drummer and plays drums as a hobby.

4. Ruud Gullit

Ruud Gullit is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. The Dutchman was noted for his ability to play different positions on the pitch. Nicknamed “The Black Tulip”, he spent his career days playing for top European clubs such as PSV, AC Milan and Chelsea. He won several trophies, including three Serie A titles and two European Cups. Gullit won the Ballon d’Or in 1987 and finished as runner-up the following year.

During his time at Feyenoord, the Dutchman released a hit song in his homeland called Not the Dancing Kind. In 2008, he collaborated with Revelation Time band for an apartheid song called South Africa. He played guitar and provided backing vocals on the song.

5. John Barnes

John Barnes was one of the best footballers in the world during the 1980s and 1990s. Well, it might come as a surprise to many football fans that the former England international was a decent rapper too.

Barnes was among the players who performed the rap of The Anfield Rap in 1988. The song reached #3 and spent 6 weeks in the top 75. The former winger again featured on England’s 1990 World Cup song World in Motion  with New Order. He performed the song in 2018 on the London Underground and on the Jonathan Ross Show in 2019.
