Gabriel Magalhaes scored a 96th minute winner as Arsenal recorded a stunning comeback victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Newcastle United were clear favorites heading into the match considering they had won all their previous three fixtures against Arsenal at St. James’ Park across all competitions. The Magpies seemed destined for a fourth consecutive win when they took the lead in the first half and managed to contain Mikel Arteta’s side for the majority of the game.
However, Arsenal found their way back into the game with six minutes left to play when substitute Mikel Merino headed home to cancel out Nick Woltemade’s first half opener. But the Gunners were not content with just one point out of the possible three. They have been recently finding ways to score goals as we saw in the UEFA Champions League win over Athletic Club and the draw against Manchester City last Sunday.

Well, the clash against Newcastle United turned out to be no different as Mikel Arteta’s men forced a win in added time. Gabriel Magalhaes header in the 96th minute sparked wild celebrations in the way end as they reduced the gap on league leaders Liverpool after earning all three points.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. That’s what football is all about. When you get what you deserve at the end there’s no better feeling. I’m so proud of the team and the way we controlled our emotions and navigated through the different stages of the game. We showed the conviction, the courage the desire and the quality we need to get where we want to be.” Said Mikel Arteta after the game, according to The Guardian.
Arsenal will now shift their attention to Champions League football as they host Super League Greece side Olympiakos at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. They will then continue with their push for the Premier League title when they take on West Ham at home on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Newcastle will travel to Brussels to face Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League on Wednesday before welcoming Nottingham Forest for Premier League action.
Aston Villa Register First Win Of The Season
Elsewhere, Aston Villa came from behind to record their first of the season in front of home fans. Villa were one of the only two teams in the Premier League yet to pick up three points heading into Sunday match. They had recorded three draws and two losses, leaving them in the relegation zone.
Unai Emery’s side seemed to be in trouble again when Raul Jimenez gave Fulham the lead two minutes after kick-off at Villa Park. However, Ollie Watkins, who had gone nine goals without scoring, equalized for Villa in the 37th minute to bring his side back into the match and end his goal drought.

Villa built on their momentum in the second half and took the lead four minutes after the restart, thanks to John McGinn’s finish in the bottom corner. Unai Emery’s men then sealed the win two minutes later when Emi Buendia scored his first Villa goal in a year.
