Nottingham Forest have appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach, less than a day after sacking Nuno Espirito Santo. Nuno was relieved off his duties last night after his relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis went from bad to worse in recent weeks. He left the club after 21 months in charge.
Sportsleo understands that Nottingham Forest new head coach Postecoglou has signed an initial two-year contract with the club. The Greek-born Australian was one of the favorites to take the head coach vacancy at Nottingham considering his experience as manager and relationship with Marinakis.

Postecoglou previously managed Tottenham Hotspur but was dismissed from his job at the end of last season after a poor run in the Premier League which saw the club finish 17th. However, he ended the club’s long-running trophy drought as he led them to UEFA Europa League triumph at the end of last season.

“We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies. His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.” Forest owner Marinakis said after it was announced that Postecoglou had been appointed as new head coach.
Marinakis added that the former Tottenham Hotspur boss has the credentials and track records to help Nottingham secure European football every season and challenge for trophies. The Greek billionaire is a big fan of Postecoglou and presented him with a trophy earlier in the summer for being the first coach with roots in Greece to win a European trophy in men’s football.
Why Was Nuno Espirito Santo Sacked?
As earlier stated, Nuno Espirito’s position as head coach of Nottingham Forest was in jeopardy after he made remarks that did not sit well with his boss.
During a pre-match interview ahead of Forest’s opening game of the 2025–26 season, Espirito Santo criticized the club’s authorities for their poor business in the transfer window. The club had released key players such as Anthony Elanga and had not made a major signing. Nuno told the media that his squad was “unbalanced” and “very, very far” from being ready for the new season.
Forest responded to the manager’s words by spending £118 million on signings the following week, including bringing in Omari Hutchinson from Ipswich Town for £37.5m.
In the next pre-match conference, Nuno said that his relationship with club owner Marinakis had deteriorated since Edu’s arrival from Arsenal. Edu is Marinakis right-hand man and head of global football at Nottingham Forest. The Portuguese manager further revealed that he had not spoken to Marinakis for a long time and had no regrets for talking about his bosses.

Nuno wanted a meeting with the Greek billionaire but in never happened as he was instead sacked on Monday after midnight. Edu and sporting director Ross Wilson led in the search for a new manager, which ended when Ange Postecoglou agreed to pick up from where Nuno had left.
