Real Madrid continued with their perfect start to the 2025/26 season by thumping Real Oviedo 3-0 on Sunday at Estadio Municipal Carlos Tartiere.

Kylian Mbappe, who scored the only goal in Osasuna’s match last weekend, grabbed a brace against Oviedo to put the Los Blancos in control of the match before Vinicius Junior came off the bench to seal the win in stoppage time. Mbappe has now scored three goals in two matches and is the leading goalscorer in La Liga after matchday two.

Rodrygo, who has been linked with a transfer away from the Santiago Bernabeu, was handed his first start by Xabi Alonso last night after being an unused substitute during the match against Osasuna. The Brazilian forward is tipped to leave the Spanish giants and sign with either Arsenal, Manchester City or Liverpool before the transfer window closes.

Vinicius Junior, Brahim Diaz and former Liverpool man Trent Alexander-Arnold were dropped to the bench. Xabi Alonso surprisingly included summer signing Franco Mastantuono in the starring XI, with the 18-year-old causing threat in Real Madrid’s attack alongside Mbappe and Rodrygo.

Real’s massive 3-0 win on Sunday means they join FC Barcelona and Villareal at the top of the standings with six points after two matches. However, Villareal are ranked position one on goal difference after crushing Girona 5-0 on Sunday.

How Real Madrid Beat Oviedo

Having won their last 6 H2Hs against Oviedo, Madrid travelled to Estadio Municipal Carlos Tarteire with the aim of continuing their dominance against rivals. The Los Blancos came to this match from a 1-0 win over Osasuna in their opening fixture of the 2025/26 La Liga season.

Vinicius Jr. started on the bench, but that didn’t seem as a problem considering his replacement Rodrygo was the first person to test Oviedo goalkeeper Aaron Escandell. This was Rodrygo’s first competitive start for Xabi Alonso’s team since playing the opener at the FIFA Club World Cup in June.

Madrid created several chances in the first half and the defining moment of the game arrived eight minutes before halftime when Mbappe opened the scoring. The Frenchman controlled Arda Guler’s beautiful pass before unleashing a beautiful strike into the bottom corner.

Real had 17 shots against the hosts only one which was Leander Dendoncker’s cheeky lob which was easily saved by Thibaut Courtois.

There was little action at both ends after the break as both teams held on to the ball and just passed it around trying to find an opening. Federico Valverde had a golden opportunity to increase Real Madrid’s lead to 2-0  after a quick counter but he fired wide.

Vinicius and Diaz were introduced in the 63rd minute, replacing Rodrygo and Mastantuono. Vini turned out to be a thorn in the flesh for the hosts as he caused chaos in the box. The Selecao star eventually made an impact in the 83rd minute, passing the ball to Mbappe who scored his second goal of the match.

Substitutes Vinicius and Diaz then combined for the third goal in stoppage time, with Vini tapping home from the Moroccan’s pass.

Xabi Alonso and his Real Madrid squad are just getting to know each other but they’ve already recorded back-to-back wins in La Liga. The Los Blancos will now begin preparations for their next fixture, which will be against Mallorca on August 30.

Meanwhile, newly promoted side Oviedo are yet to score after two matches and will hope that changes when they clash with Real Sociedad on August 30 at home.
