Sudan coach Kwesi Appiah is one of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) sensations leading Sudan national team, Falcons of Jediane.

It’s under his patronage that Sudan achieved a magnificent 4-0 win against Nigeria in CHAN24 meet-up. This was one match that revealed his tactical ingenuity as Sudan mauled Nigeria to the bone.

His management of Sudan at CHAN 2024 matches the expectations of his fans and the country’s federation. The Falcons of Jediane won CHAN in 1970, and later finished third in CHAN 2011 and 2018.

Reports suggested that Sudan coach Kwesi Appiah was handed a blank cheque on condition he won two major African tournaments or qualified the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A leading Ghanaian media house reported that he was eyeing CHAN 2024 and AFCON to write the cheque.

In an exclusive interview with Pulse Sports, Appiah laughed off the seriousness of the offer, but thanked his Sudanese fans for their continued support.

Appiah remained cagey about the ‘blank cheque’ offer, but stated that he is aware he will have a lot of ‘gifts’ from the Sudanese if he won the tournaments.

The 65-year-old Ghanaian coach said he feels motivated by the faith Sudanese fans have bestowed on him.

Who is Kwesi Appiah Coach of Ghana?

Sudan coach Kwesi Appiah is a Ghanaian national born on June 30, 1960, in Kumasi.  His whole life revolved around football. He played as a left back

He studied at Opoku Ware School (OWASS), and represented his school in many football tournaments.  Appiah featured as a club footballer in the Prestea Mine Stars between 1982 and 1983, after which he joined Asante Kotoko and played there till 1993.

Between 1982 and 1992, Appiah represented the Ghana football national team and participated in two selections of FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He played in the 1982 team that claimed the 1982 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Appiah transitioned to football coaching after retiring as a football player. His first job was at Asante Kotoko, where he was an assistant coach for three years, until 1995.

Kotoko appointed him the head coach, a position which he served in for a year before joining Ghana’s national team’s technical staff in 2000.

He served his home team as an assistant coach from 2007 to 2012 under Claude Le Roy and Milovan Rajevac.

In 2012, he was appointed the head coach of Ghana’s senior team, guiding them to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Appiah became the first African coach to lead Ghana to the FIFA tournament. He left the team in 2014 to coach Sudan’s Al Khartoum from 2014 to 2016.

He then returned to his Ghanaian team in 2017 and served for three years before being sacked in 2020.

As fate would have it, Sudan named him the head coach of her national team in 2023. Since then, Sudan coach Kwesi Appiah has done incredibly well with the team.
