The Nigeria vs Sudan match produced one of the biggest upsets at the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The two sides clashed last night at New Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar and the match ended with Nigeria being hammered 4-0. The Super Eagles came into the match as favorites but an early own goal by Leonard Ngenge and a penalty by Walieldin Khdir’s left them with a mountain to climb at half-time. Things got worse for them in the second half as Abdel Raouf Yagoub scored a brace to increase Sudan’s lead to 4-0.

Nigeria, who are without a win at CHAN 2024 after two games, are now mathematically out of the competition. Super Eagles Head coach Eric Chelle confessed that his side has lost all ambition and will only play the third match for ‘honour and respect’. He also said noted that the 4-0 humiliation was his worst match as coach.

“We have lost all ambition. The CHAN is over for us. We have a third match to play for our honour and respect. But I am disappointed by this match. It is the worst game I’ve overseen from the dugout as coach.” Chelle is quoted by CAFOnline.com.
Whereas Nigeria will be seeking redemption in the final match of CHAN, Sudan will be fighting for a top finish in Group D when they face Senegal on Tuesday, August 19.
Sudan, who recorded a draw in their opening match of the tournament, are now top of the group with four points. Senegal are second with the same number of points but lower on the standings due to goal difference. Congo sit third with three points and Nigeria wrap things up with zero points.
How Nigeria Vs Sudan Unfolded
Nigeria came into the match with the aim of securing their first win at CHAN 2024. They started the game with urgency and almost found the back of the net from corner kicks in the eighth and ninth minute after poor handling of the ball by goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja. Raymond Tochukwu also threatened to find the back of the net from outside the box but his shot went wide.
Anthony Ijoma thought he had given Nigeria the lead in the 22nd minute but a VAR review showed that he was just offside. In a shocking turn of events, Sudan took the lead in the 25th minute after being the struggling side for the most part of this game.

Yagoub Murghani Mustafa’s shot hit the post and then fell on Leonard Ngenge who unfortunately directed the ball into his own net. Shortly before the break, Nigeria found themselves in deep trouble after giving away a penalty. Sudan captain Walieldin Khdir made no mistake from the spot as he fired the ball home to give his side a 2-0 lead.

Sudan scored two goals within seven minutes to completely put the game to bed. With a 4-0 lead, the Falcons of Jediane just needed to pass the ball around waiting for full-time.
