After the New York WBC, he won four more fights in 1983 and became royalty by knocking out Wilfredo Gomez in round 11 winning the WBC featherweight championship.
Nelson was in Los Angeles and fought Marion Martinez by a split decision over 12 rounds but he was dropped in the 10th round in 1988 and it was a sad moment. In 1995, he defeated Gabriel Ruelas in 5th round claiming the title of World Champion. The following year, he and his opponent Leija had their third bout and he maintained his title with a six-round knockout.
Nelson lost the WBC title to Genaro Hernandez when he was beaten in twelve rounds on points. In 2018, Nelson organized an event to mark his 60th birthday at the Bukom Boxing Arena an event that was attended by dignitaries like the then-British Commissioner to Ghana, the president of the Boxing Authority and two former sports ministers among others. There were five bouts and three wins by knockout.
